Book Description

London: Ingrim, Cooke, and Co., 1853. [iv], 305, [1], 10pp., 8vo. Woodcut frontispiece, additional title with vignette, and six plates. Original embossed brown cloth, “The Illustrated Family Novelist” gilt-stamped on upper cover and spine; spine extremities frayed and very slightly chipped, but sound. First edition, a wildly gothic novel with apparitions, castles, violent struggles, multiple romances and, sometimes as a consequence, deaths. But the novel is firmly placed in the mid-nineteenth century by its closing statement that the central character, Aubrey Conyers, personified “what he knew by bitter experience was the most cruel of all poverty - the poverty of the struggling educated middle classes.” Wolff 6573, in a different binding; not in Sadleir, XIX Century Fiction, nor does Sadleir note “The Illustrated Family Novelist” series, for which the advertisements in this book offer this and seven other titles.
