First edition of this translation; such was Schiller’s stature at the time that a different, competing translation appeared the same year. One of Schiller’s great works, loosely based on the events surrounding the real Don Carlos of Spain, Schiller's character is a democratic champion attempting to free Flanders from the despotic grip of his father, King Phillip.
