Mason was a Senator from Massachusetts. LS. 3pgs. 8" x 10". 13 Augt 1819. George Town. A letter signed "J. Mason Prest" to lawyer Henry Chapman of Annapolis. Mason communicated from the Bank of Columbia "I beg permission to avail this Bank of your professional service, to aid it in the recovery of the debts due it in Anne Arundel County, as shown by the enclosed Notes and proceedings, that is to say, due from Jeremiah Merrill who at present keeps the Tavern, late McCoys on the road 14 miles from Baltimore toward Washington. 1900 Dollars on one note and interest from 28th May 1818 and cost of protest - and 135 dollars on one other note and interest from Nov 18th 1816 and cost of protest... mention a case in the General Court that occurred in 1799 - 'Bank of Columbia vs. Ross' which after long argument by able counsel was settled in favor of the Bank, as well in relation to its constitutional right to the process, as to the mode of proceeding adopted by it... ". The letter is in fine condition overall
