Book Description
ALS. 2pg. 5¼” x 8¼”. March 18, 1884. Boston, MA. An autograph letter signed “J.M. Forbes” regarding ridding animals from his beloved Naushon Island. He wrote to Senator Howes Norris. In part: “I have already suggested omitting squirrels from the protected animals. I pay a bounty for their destruction on my hands. As to the rest of the Bill it would improve it an much to keep the quail protected just as they now are until 15th October. It would be some gain to get their day of slaughter put off…to 1st Ocober. I recommend in Section 4 omitting Snipe from protection until 1st May, as they are a bird of passage here and as it seems to me a mistake to try for too much, but I should incline to cute short the season fixed in section…”. Naushon Island is privately owned by the Forbes family and has been their exclusive retreat for over a century. Senator John F. Kerry, a member of the Forbes family, has vacationed there. Written on paper with a grid design, the letter is in good shape.
