An autograph letter signed " Gerrit Smith" : " Your esteemed letter is forwarded to me here where I am spending a few weeks with my daughter (Mrs. Miller) & her family. I am pleased to know that you like my speech to my neighbors. I congratulate you on your having two sons who will begin their political life by voting for President Grant. My namesake honors his name." Grant was re-elected in 1872. The letter is in very fine condition.
