Book Description

ALS. 2pg. 8" x 10" . September 1, 1899. North East Cecil Co., Maryland. An autograph letter signed " J.S. Woodward" on behalf of Professor Harry Lewis requesting banjo pricing for his work with magicians Harry and Mlle. L. Lewis: " Wishing to get a Banjo at once. Would like to know if you have one in stock that will suit me. I do not want to pay more than from 10 to 15 dollars for it. I prefer one with a 12 in. rim, 19 in. finger board if I can get it, but if you have not one in stock let [me] know soon as possible what size I can get from you. Maybe I can use one with a smaller rim, but must have the 19 in neck. Also send price of canvass case to fit. I am with the above people playing banjo solos and want the banjo to play on the first of next week. Make price as reasonable as you can. Write and let me hear from you at once so I can tell you which one to send me. Of course this is cash business and if I should like to change the banjo for another kind after I try it why I hope it will be all right. I will give your banjo a good send off." The letter is written on the elaborate letterhead of Lewis and Lewis, which advertises their specialties in magic, training dogs, lecturing, training doves, and playing the piano or organ. It is in fine condition with some spots of toning and the usual mailing folds.
