Ellsworth was a Continental Congressman, served as a Senator from 1789 to 1796, and is believed to have coined the term "United States." He drafted legislation that created the Federal court system and served as the second Chief Justice. ADS. 1pg. 8 ¼" x 4 ½". Sept 14 1781. Hartford. An autograph document signed "Oliver Ellsworth" in the text. Ellsworth penned "For Value recd We Moses Butler 2d & Edward Forbs both or Hartford promise to pay to Oliver Ellsworth Eight pounds nine shillings & seven pence lawful money in three months from the Date hereof with lawful Interest - Witness our hands at Hartford Sept 14 1781." It is signed at the conclusion by " Moses Butler" and " Edward Forbs". Moses Butler (1716-1801) lived in Hartford. There are notations on the back concerning the payment. There is a horizontal fold, some chipping to the top and bottom margin, and short fold separations. The writing is dark and the condition is fine
