Book Description

AM. 3pg. 4 ½” x 7 ¼”. No date. Dangan Castle [Ireland]. An autograph manuscript, perhaps by an Englishman, concerning Irish freedom. Although it is undated, the size of the paper and handwriting suggest a date of about 1830: “I have marked the progress of the national petition and rejoice that it is assuming a bold and resolute bearing; Yet, I humbly suggest that the popular voice should be more bold and resolute still. For according to the Italian principle recognized as just by British Ministers that the voice of a majority of the people without the consent of the ruling sovereign, is morally & politically sufficient to change the form of government or cede the country to another ruler thought the whole. As the Duchies; Thereof as the Romagna. Now Ireland has a stronger right to the Repeal of the Union for 3 reasons. Firstly She is not the whole nation as the Duchies, therefore the laws and the Ruler of the Country are not annihilated* Secondly She is not an integral portion of the nation; is separated from Britain by the Sea, and natives of both Countries differ in origin, manners, religion and language few who dare have the effrontery to assert that the English Language is the National language of Ireland. Thirdly the Repeal of the Union does not necessarily change the Ruling sovereign therefore the proponents to the measure cannot plead that it is uncompromising stern and unconstitutional, if I may so express myself as the same principle of Changing the government as used by the Italians who set aside with the authority of the reigning sovereign. Now was it by petitioning the Rulers and governments that the Italians brought about the change of governments and Rulers? Did the governments and Rulers voluntarily cede their powers? No but in stern opposition of them their authority was set a nought. The principle of Universal suffrage was applied and the voice of the majority became law. That this law is just and constitutional is the avowed doctrine of the most eminent British statesman. To ascertain the opinions of a Majority of the people by the number of signatures attached to the petition to the Sovereign is unnecessary and derogatory to the justice and power of the principle. Let Irishman all vote. Let their suffrage be for or against the Repeal of the Union. As the voice of a majority is law, should it be for the Repeal Claim it as just and constitutional. Be not beating around the bush in ‘Your petitioners shall ever’ sort of style which is titally beneath the dignity of a nation and calculated to have your appear responded to only by scoffers & Dangan Castle Co Down *and those who may still prefer to be sheltered under the wing of British freedom may still be at liberty to do so.” Dangan Castle was the birthplace of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington. The manuscript has soiling and a couple of fold tears that affect little. A fine content document.
