ALS. 1pg. 7.5” x 9”. October 21, 1803. Philadelphia, PA. An autograph letter signed “Stephen Girard” to James Cooper regarding the death of an associate’s son. In part: “It is on a very unpleasant circumstance and with much grief that I am under the necessity of addressing you. Knowing your intimacy with our mutual friend Capt. Robert Bethell I beg that you will communicate him the lamentable news of the death of his warthy Son Mr. Robt. Bethell Jun. enclosed in a letter from Mr. Martin Birkham residing at the Isle of France which affirms that melancholy circumstance.” Aside from a prominent brown spot covering a few words of text, the document is clearly legible with a bold signature.
