Book Description

ALS. 2pg. 7 ½” x 9”. Usher’s Island [Dublin, Ireland]. 23 November 1778. An autograph letter signed “Joshua Pim” regarding wool prices: “The Abstracts that you have done me the Honour to inclose to me certainly throw much light upon the Question but they are not entirely to be relied on because they state only the Transactions of a particular district and beside Ballinsaloe there are other considerable markets in the Kingdom both for Wool and Sheep; I should however expect that the result of a general Enquiry would corroborate what appears from the Transactions of that Fair. Was I to presume upon offering an opinion, it would be this – I should suppose that the increase in agriculture at first fell heavy upon the Breed of Sheep, of course, Wool became scarce and the Prices high. These high prices would naturally draw back the Farmer to that Stock and therefore the Breed of Sheep and Growth of Wool may have been again increasing since the year 1773…men concerned in the practice are sometimes the most indifferent to the theory of commerce…”. Pim was born in 1748 and died in 1822. The letter has mailing folds and is in fine condition.
