(1772-1834). Crawford served as Secretary of War from 1815 to 1816, and Secretary of the Treasury from 1816 to 1825. He lost the 1824 Presidential race to John Quincy Adams. JOSEPH NOURSE (1754-1841). Nourse was the Register of the Treasury for over forty years; he also was Vice President of the American Bible Society. DS. 4pg. 9 ¾" x 15 ½". May 4, 1822. Kentucky. A warrant signed "Wm H Crawford" as Secretary of the Treasury and " Joseph Nourse". The document is for the arrest of Amos Edwards, a "collector of the direct tax in Kentucky," if he did not remit collected money to the United States Treasury. In part: "And whereas, the said Amos Edwards, having failed to pay over, according to the Act of Congress in such case made and provided the said firm of $1,143.74 and of $2,909.24 amounting together to $4,052.98. These are therefore to command you to proceed immediately to levy and collect the said sum of $4,052.98 by distress and sale of the goods, chattel, and personal effects of the said Amos Edwards. And should these not be found sufficient goods, chattel, and personal effects of the said Amos Edwards to satisfy the said sum of $4,052.98 remaining due and unpaid as aforesaid, you are hereby commanded to commit the body of the said Amos Edwards to prison, there to remain until discharged by due course of law... ". Edwards was an early Kentucky settler, according to Internet records. The document is in rather fragile condition with paper seals and folds. It is written in a clear, legible script and the condition is very good
