Book Description

Founded in 1847 by Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) in 1879, Christian Science follows the basic tenants of Protestant Christianity, but uses Jesus's story as an example of the ideal mind humans must attain in order to overcome mortal limits. Through prayer, disease can be cured and a greater understanding of the world can be reached. Eddy's 1875 work Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is the utmost authority on the beliefs and practices of the movement.
ALS. 1pg. 7 ‰¼" x 67". No Date. Japan. A beautifully autograph letter signed "Florence E. Boynton" to "Miss Marian Jordan." The unusual letter is 67 inches wide. Boynton was a Christian Scientist and missionary to Japan where she was a well respect English teacher, even preparing the famed Japanese actress Mori Ritsuko for her role in The Merchant of Venice. Boynton, who was in Japan from 1935 to 1940, speaks of her Christian virtues and fervent belief in the Christian Science doctrine: "Here it is 8PM. I have been at my desk since noon preparing next week's lesson... Love. It is beautiful. I have the same subject for Wednesday evening. We have a beautiful little congregation. Beginning last January with 14 or 15 now we have 30 and they are earnest. Today our collection went to the famine sufferers of North China ‰¥476. The soloist is a singing teacher so she keeps us wonderfully. Miss Dewette is first-reader in... You should see her now - what spiritual radiance. I stayed with them a few days on my return. The little Swiss girl I can't quite place. I might say here that your letter has just come. I am glad you had the holidays with your mother. Really we are blessed who have C.S. The case I have discontinued to efficaciously follow; doing my mental work seems to me all I can do. I know C.S. is truth so nothing can overturn it. We know that in every case of great organization the material has usurped seemingly the spiritual. This may be just the upheaval of purification. My but the density of the material thought in this age and in fact any age! I feel a little guilty for even having given figures in the first paragraph. I rarely do it because I notice that those who are most interested in figures rarely are on speaking terms with the spiritual. My sympathy goes out (better compassion perhaps) to those in authority. Out here we are as a drop of the ocean and yet the zeal to organize. Fortunately the majority are humble and stand firm for healing rather than for organization. You say riches are the curse. Your are right. I observe how in so many cases these people have made their demonstration and are now worshipping it. Yes, Mrs. Chisholm showers people. Is it generosity? No. It is mere purchasing power. Purchasing what? The right of way for an indomitable human will. I don't know why I had to have the lesson but I have learned much and I am sure that I am freed from much material thought. God grant that my progress may be thru Science and not thru suffering. And yet if not thru Science, I am ready for the other. No one can imagine what the human will is when it is backed with money. I know the only help I can be to her is to know her spiritually and to guard against a forced recognition of the human. Christian Science is God power so I know that thru its understanding I shall be protected against a further attack, onslaught, I might say from this quarter: You are dear to pass over it so lightly. I am glad you find the Halls so helpful. Thank you for introducing them to me. I also found them beautifully helpful. I have the brocade for a bag for her and some for you. Now I must get them made up. Do remember me kindly to them"Äîalso to your sister. Tell her houses are not to be had now. Even the hotels are filled: Many loving thoughts to you and grateful ... of your kindness... ". The letter is beautifully scribed on a long scroll of flowery rice paper and is in great condition, with fold separations and a few typical ink smears. The original envelope accompanies this piece
