Book Description
LS. 1pg. 8 ¼" x 9 " . January 23, 1822. Philadelphia. A letter signed " Stephen Girard" to Captain Isaac Isaacs of the ship North America based in Philadelphia: " Calculating on the sailing power of the Ship North America, I presumed that ship has reached Batavia [near the Netherlands] in October last that she will be in Europe in March next. With that Expectation, I forward this Letter via England under cover of the one which I write to Capt Swift of the Ship" which is to touch at Cowes in the Isle of Wight for my orders, and direct him to deliver it to you. I am particularly waiting to hear from you and Capt Swift respecting the House of Messr A.L. Fouskin & Co. of Batavia. I am fearful that the misunderstanding between the Partners of that House has detained my ships in that Port longer than necessary. I have been informed of the death of Mr. Skelton of Batavia, for whom I gave you a Letter of Introduction. The principle object of this, is to request that" Ship Superb is or should arrive at Amsterdam or other neighboring Port of the one where you will be at, That you will consult with him on all Subjects, either by Letter or otherwise, respecting the Ship North America and Cargo, and follow the Instructions which he will give you in my behalf." Captain Isaacs died not long after this letter when on a voyage to China. The letter is tipped to a larger sheet and a seal tear on the left side affects a few words. The writing is dark and legible. The letter is bound in a green cloth case with a disbound biography of Girard and images of him.
