LS. 1pg. 8" x 9" . April 17, 1791. Paris. A letter signed " Duportail" as France"Äôs Minister of War to an engineer concerning his appointment in the Royal Forces: " ...pursuant to the law of October 31, 1790, concerning the Engineers Corps, the king has included you among his lieutenants...his Majesty intends for you to go to Calais no later than the fifth of May to serve the present year, to do all that will be requested of you...by those officers to whom you are subordinate in rank...you will received the pay attributed to you by the Regulation..." . The letter has dark writing and pale blue paper. The right side is trimmed and the left side has a light mounting remnant, but the condition is fine. According to the American Book Prices Current, this is the only Duportail to sell at major auction in the past thirty years.
