An American jurist, Kent was the first professor of law at Columbia College. He was then made Chief Justice of the New York Supreme Court, where his groundbreaking decisions did much to revive the English principle of equity. He is best remembered for his four volume Commentaries on American Law. DS. 1pg. 8" x 6 ΒΌ". No date. No place. The conclusion of a legal document signed "James Kent": "the charter declares that on the second Tuesday of May in each year, the mayor or clerk shall attend & by whom the Oath of Office shall be administered to the members elected. The order is imperative & the Mayor has only to inquire & see who are the members elected, & as I have already stated the returns in the present case... ". There is a chip to the upper left corner, but it affects no text. There is some light soiling and the overall condition is very good
