Book Description
a) TLS. 1pg. 8 " x 11" . December 12, 1962. New York, NY. A typed letter signed " Edward Albee" to Selma Rosen regarding a pending visit to the Baltimore Museum of Art: " I"Äôm looking forward to my visit to the Museum in February. I think a title such as, "ÄoThe Playwright"Äôs Position in America Today,"Äô would be a good one. You can obtain both the photograph and biographical material for publicity purposes from Mr. Howard Atlee, 200 West 57th Street, New York City." Selma Rosen was the wife of Baltimore doctor Israel Rosen, and together they amassed one of the most respected collections of modern art in the country. Known to be members of Baltimore"Äôs Jewish elite, their expansive collection has been auctioned throughout the country, and their art book collection was donated to Johns Hopkins University, of which Dr. Rosen was a graduate. Coincidentally, 1962 was the year that Albee"Äôs legendary play, Who"Äôs Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, premiered on Broadway. Although it was chosen for the 1963 Pulitzer Prize for drama, the award was never given out due to the play"Äôs controversial nature. Typed on plain paper, the document is in very fine condition. b) DS. 1pg. 8 " x 11" . March 14, 1963. No Place. A document signed " Edward Albee" authorizing the Baltimore Museum of Art to make a tape recording of a lecture he did there in February of 1963: " I herewith grant permission to the Baltimore Museum of Art to make a tape recording of my lecture entitled "ÄoThe Theater Today: Several Forms of Absurdity"Äô delivered at the Museum on February 24, 1963. It being agreed that the Baltimore Museum of Art will make no commercial use of the above-mentioned tape recording nor authorize its use in broadcasting, said tape may be used by the Museum in connection with its own programs on its own premises." The document is in fine condition. c) TLS. 1pg. 8 " x 11" . March 19, 1963. New York, NY. A typed letter signed " Edward Albee" to modern art collector Mrs. Selma Rosen: " I have been derelict in not thanking you and Dr. Rosen for your hospitality. Thank you so much. I have already returned the enclosed forms to somebody. In case they were lost, I am signing these and sending them to you. It was a great pleasure to be in Baltimore, and I hope we can do it next year." Albee was in Baltimore for a lecture at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Typed on plain paper, the document is in very fine condition.
