(1823-1903). Franklin was a Civil War general who saw action at Antietam and Fredericksburg. ALS. 1pg. 5 ¼" x 8 ¼". January 12, 1887. Hartford, Conn. An autograph letter signed "W.B. Franklin" to Colonel Silas Crispin. Writing on "Office of Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Co." letterhead, Franklin communicated "Will you send me twenty dummy Springfield model cartridges cal .45 70 qrs powder (when loaded) 500 qrs lead? If you have to sell them I will get the necessary authority but otherwise I expect you to present them. Little Butler was here yesterday, and reminded me of you by his way of walking up & down across the floor. He has somewhat improved, and does not now know everything, as he did when I used to know him in olden times." Crispin, from Pennsylvania, graduated third in his famous West Point Class of 1846. During the Civil War, he was an assistant inspector of arsenals and a captain of ordnance. The letter is in very fine condition overall
