Book Description

ALS. 6pg. 5 ‰¼" x 8" . February 2, 1884. Porto Santa Maria, Portugal. An autograph letter signed " Ant. F. Chavez" brimming with anti-Catholic sentiment. The author writes from jail after being accused of heresy. In part: " It seems to me very much just what the Romanists are trying to do in the Unity States if they can; and I think the best thing for the Christians to do and Christians ministers is to preach more and more the love of Christ instead of preaching decrees. The love of Christ will penetrate the sins but decrees won"Äôt - it is the love of Christ only that makes a man better to live this which God has made with his mighty hands, and prepares him for the heavens where Christ reigns forever. The Romanists are trying to bring all world under their power to have another bloody-shed war and to force every one to worship their Semi-Gods which have ears and hear not, have eyes and see not. I suppose I must let you know that I am here now to be judge by ungodly men next May and that I have been in the jail for the gospel-sake. I had a meeting here last summer" and a man came in and trouble the meeting very much indeed" He came in up to me and said that everything that I had said was not truly and that the bible was false. Then I said to him that it was not, and that it was the word of God" Then he asked me if I believe in Sacrament. I said, I do according as Christ and his apostles taught it and I read him the place in the scriptures where speaks of the Lord"Äôs supper" He went and said that I had been preaching heretics religion and profane the Roman church" But I am trusting in God and hoping that he will deliver me from the hands of the enemy." The letter is in very good condition, with slight fold separations and very light toning not affecting legibility.
