A document signed " Wm Hyde" : " I hereby certify that on the 16th Day of November 1780 came before me Jeremiah Townly Chase Esquire elected a Member of the Council to the Governor and took repeated and subscribed the several oaths directed to be taken by the Constitution and Form of Government and Laws of this State and made and Subscribed the Declaration of his Belief in the Christian Religion." Jeremiah Chase (1748-1828) was an Annapolis lawyer who served in the Continental Congress and was the state"Äôs Chief Justice. William Hyde served in the Maryland militia during the Revolution. According to the Maryland Constitution of 1776, only Christians could hold office; thus, Hyde"Äôs affirmation of Christianity (in 1826, Jews were allowed to hold office and have equal rights). The document has a couple of margin chips and a crayon marking of " Col" before Hyde"Äôs large signature.
