DS. 1pg. 8” x 6 ½”. June 6, 1815. Boston. A document signed “J. Brooks” as Adjutant General of the Massachusetts Militia about resignation of Major General Joseph Whiton; he had risen in the Massachusetts Militia since he was commissioned a lieutenant in 1759: “The Governor and Commander in Chief has accepted the resignation of Joseph Whiton as Major General of the ninth Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth; and he is hereby honorably discharged, at his own request from the Office of Major General in the Division aforesaid.” Whiton held many civil offices, including an associate justice of the Court of Sessions of Berkshire County from 1819 until his death. Shortly after this document was signed, Brooks was elected Governor of Massachusetts. The document is in fine condition with a couple of small mounting remnants on the verso.
