(1844-1935). Greely, an explorer, fought in the Civil War. In the 1880s, he explored the Arctic for the government, and lost nineteen of his twenty-five men. He later established the world's first commercial wireless station in Alaska. He was awarded one of the four peacetime Medals of Honor for his explorations. LS. 1pp. 5" x 7 ¾". June 19, 1890. Washington, D.C. A letter signed "A W Greely" on "Office of the Chief Signal Officer" letterhead. He wrote to the editor of The Independent newspaper of New York: "I have been exceedingly busy since my return from the West, and perhaps my few lines are too late... ". The letter has a small tear in the lower left corner, but is in fine condition otherwise, with a large and bold autograph
