Ziegfeld was a legendary American theater producer. His extravagant Ziegfeld Follies were set to music by Irving Berlin and George Gershwin. His shows launched the careers of Will Rogers, W.C. Fields and Fanny Brice. <P> ANS. 1pg. 5 ‰ˆ" x 8 ‰ˆ". August 1917. New York. An autograph note signed <I>"<B>Flo</B>"</I> in pencil. He wrote at the top of a letter <I>"Dear Chas I feel you would be greatly disappointed in the Millers he is an old man nearly as old as we are. Yours <B>Flo</B>"</I>. This was in response to a typed letter signed <I>"<B>C.B.D.</B>"</I> dated August 20, 1917; it was from theater producer Charles Dillingham. Dillingham wrote to Ziegfeld: <I>"The Marvellous</I> [sic] <I>Millers haven't danced in New York in five years and we are going to have so much dancing at the Century how would it do to put them on for just two minutes? Let me know by return mail as they have to sign their Orpheum contracts within a day or so."</I> The most famous Miller was <B>Marilyn Miller</B> (1898-1936), who rose to prominence through the Ziegfeld Follies and starred on Broadway in <I>Sally</I>
