ALS. 1pg. 5 ½” x 8 ½”. May 11, 1875. St. Louis. An autograph letter signed “W.T. Sherman General” on “Headquarters Army of the United States” letterhead. He wrote to Appleton and Company in New York City: “Please deliver on the order of John Hite a copy of my Memoirs, for Colonel Ferdinand Lecompte of Lauserne [Lucerne]…& charge same to me.” Sherman published his memoirs in 1875. Ferdinand Lecompte was a Swiss military officer who came to the United States to observe the Civil War. The letter is in fine condition with dark ink, a faint red crayon mark at a diagonal is present.
