Book Description

Wallace was an American humorist who wrote Mr. Togo and Suffering Husbands. He was also an early screenwriter. TLS. 1pg. 5 ½" x 8 ½". October 11, 1919. Louisville, Ky. An autograph letter signed "Wallace Irwin" in pencil. He wrote to "Larry": "Here is the Laskey contract for the Togo movie I did for them. You will see by reading the Fifth and Sixth clauses that I have in no way bound myself to the Laskeys for further Togos, save in that the title 'Hashimura Togo' is theirs. They have no option on my future work, only an agreement that, in case they produce any more Togos, they will get them at the American Play Co bargain price. If you will compare this with the motion picture clause in my contract with Miss Gates the matter will be clarified - except I think that Miss Kauser's clause was too cautious, as I owe nothing but the title to the Laskeys." The letter is in very fine condition. In 1917, Hashimura Togo was released, starring Sessue Hayakawa. Pre-1920 letters mentioning films are scarce
