Dewey had a distinguished career as a naval officer. A graduate of the Naval Academy, he saw considerable service during the Civil War, and later was president of the General Board of the Navy Department. He remains most famous for his victory over the Spanish fleet at Manila, a feat which established the U.S. as a major naval power. <P> LS. 2pg. 4 ‰ˆ" x 7". Sept 14, 98. Flagship Olympia, Manila. P.I. A rare letter signed <I>"<B>George Dewey</B>"</I> to an unidentified girl. A few months after defeating the Spanish at Manila Bay, Dewey penned <I>"My dear little friend, I have received your sweet note and I give myself the pleasure of ending you an answer at once. I remember very well having seen you in Washington, and so I have a very good reason to send the button you ask for. With love Your friend <B>George Dewey</B>"</I>. The brass-colored button has a naval decoration and was manufactured by Peter Thomson of Philadelphia and New York. The letter, written on separate sheets, is in fine condition, though there is a light fold through the signature. There are few Dewey letters from Manila, according to the <I>American Book Prices Current</I>
