Marshall was the Army Chief of Staff during World War II, the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense. While serving as Truman's Secretary of State, he proposed the European Recovery Program known as "The Marshall Plan," where the United States spent billions of dollars rebuilding war-torn western Europe. AL. 2pg. 4 ¼" x 5 ½". Feb 19, 1958. No place. An autograph letter in Marshall's handwriting to Colonel Earl L. Thornton of Smithboro, Illinois: "Dear Thornton - I was pleased and surprised to hear from you after these many passing years. I thought you had an autographed photo, but will send you one as soon as I can arrange it. (I think I can get the envelope here I have the prints)". There is also a retained copy of this letter in typed form. There are small staple holes, but the condition is fine
