Internal condition is generally quite good with exception of fore edge damp and ink staining that is stronger at front of book. Overall this is a very good copy of the scarce first edition. Orfila, Spanish-born French toxicologist and chemist, is the founder of the science of toxicology. He worked to make chemical analysis a routine part of forensic medicine, and made studies of asphyxiation, the decomposition of bodies, and exhumation. He helped to develop tests for the presence of blood in a forensic context and is credited as one of the first people to use a microscope to assess blood and semen stains. He also worked to improve public health systems and medical training. His research provided clear evidence that toxins can be found in parenchyma and organic liquids. He was appointed physician to Louis XVIII in 1816, was a member of the French Academy of Science and recipient of the first prize in chemistry and physics from the University of Valencia.
