Columbine flower and plant stamped on cover in gilt, petals and sepals blue with gilt outline. Ends of spine slightly frayed, corners bumped. Small breaks in cloth along hinges Collation: [vi] vii-xi, [1]-316, [1]-16 (catalog). There are 16 plates prepared from photograhs taken by Mr. Horner of Settle. The general condition of the text is good with only minor marginal spotting. This is one of the earlier works by Farrer where he describes many details of gardening and plants therein. This is clearly a sequel to his earlier work on the rock garden and which was followed by a two volume on the English Rock Garden in 1919. Farrer was an exceptional writer who captured the attention of his readers with a prose previously unseen. He provided descriptions of plants with keen insight, knowledge and humor, as well as a critical eye. Provenance: Short note inserted in front of book from Farrer to a woman for whom he promised to prepare a japanes garden in time for her husband’s birthday. Farrer mentions that he has instructed his manager’s deputy to send some plants to her and asked if they can be kept (presumably in her garden). He also asks whether she would like for him to make up a garden when he returns the next Monday or Thursday. It is not clear from Farrer’s writing at the top of his note paper as to the date. The note paper is from Incleborough, Lancester with listing on upper left corner “Station & Telegrams Clapham, Yorks.” There is an ink inscription on the front free end paper: “Joni(sic), From the Phillipine Islands” followed by a letter signature the looks like the Greek letter Theta or a Q. The inscription is dated 27 X 09. This may well be an inscription from Farrer since the book was published in September 1909.
