Erlangen:: Johann Jacob Palm,, 1793 . Second edition. 1/2 Vellum. Very Good +. 2nd edition. Folio (42.5 X 26.7 cm). Larrge paper copy. Modern half vellum with marble boards. New end papers damp staining in lower gutter to first 40 pages.Collation: [2], [5] 6-94;[2] [95]-197, [3]; [4] 199-280pp. + 75 uncolored plates, loose in separate box made with same marble paper. Text and plates uncut. Ther is some minor paper creasing and small tear at bottom of pp.261-265 that does not affect text. The text and plates are free of foxing or marks other than the minor gutter damp staining of first 20 leaves of text. The work is divided into three sections with separate title pages: Manipuli I, II, & III. The plates are engraved by V. Bischoff, G.W. Knorr, and J.C. Keller after designs by N. Gabler, J.C. Keller and V. Bischoff, and contain some excellent representations of magnified anatomic detail. This was a period when innovations in the fields of microscopy and taxonomy focused attention on the dissection of plant parts for identification purposes. (DeBelder). Schmidel was a German physician and botanist. (Nissen 1780 ; Cleveland, 460 ; DeBelder, 326).
