Book Description

London: printed for John [....], Robert Sayer, Thos. Jeffereys, Carington Bowles, [November 1762]. Engraving by P. Canot, after Patten. Titled in French and English. Expert restoration, with occasional slight loss to lettering. Sheet size: 13 3/4 x 20 3/8 inches. A famous print "considered to be the first print of Montreal after its capture in 1760" (Spendlove) Spendlove described this print as "very rare", he noted that the image "was drawn by Thomas Patten, a British officer who accompanied General Amherst's expedition for the capture of Montreal in 1760. It was engraved by P. Canot ... This fine and rare print formed part of the Scenographia Americana. It is an excellent example of balanced composition, and shows the small walled city of Montreal with three ships and some small craft in the harbour. It is considered to be the first print of Montreal after its capture in 1760 by General Amherst. Canot was an able engraver, and his rendition on copper of Patten's small water-colour was a good one ... Patten was as much of a military draughtsman as an artist, like most of the British soldier-artists, and his work is characterized by extreme accuracy and strength of line" (op. cit. p.13) Jefferys Catalogue of the Sigmund Samuel Collection (1948) 54; Spendlove The Face of Early Canada (1958) p.13
