Book Description
Chicago: Privately Published, 1946. 9" x 6". 149pp. Red patterned paper covered boards. Spine faded, ownership inscription and bookplate, several very crude tape repairs, a few pencil margin checks. Gnerally VG condition. One of only 300 copies printed. Laid in to this copy is a one page holograph 1954 letter from novelist Maude Meagher. In the letter she comments glowingly on MacNair's love of Asian culture, her generosity and the Chinese mythological significance of the letterhead stationery that she used. To illustrate the point she has included a holograph letter on distinctive pine / fir paper from MacNair to her housed in a fish - themed envelope. MacNair was a noted writer and a translator of Chinese poetry who collaborated with Amy Lowell. Meagher was a writer of fantastic novels. Her novel The Green Scamander features Amazon warriors and has been hailed as an important work of lesbian historical fiction. Her novel White Jade was set in China, an obvious tie with MacNair.
