Book Description
1942. MACDOUGALL, Allan Ross. AND THE GREEKS. A Book Of Hellenic Recipes And Culinary Lore. NY: Near East Foundation, [1942]. Small 8vo., pictorial white cloth in dust jacket; 109 pages. First Edition. A collection of ancient and modern Greek recipes. All profits from the sale of this book was used to feed hungry children in Greece during World War II. Signed presentation from MacDougall on the front endpaper, to future First Lady Bess Truman: "For Mrs. Harry S. Truman with the respectful good wishes of the author, Allan Ross Macdougall." Harry Truman was very familiar with the work of the Near East Foundation and, once president, wanted his "Point IV Program" patterned after the organization and also using the organization as the model for structuring the U.S. Agency For International Development. The NEF was founded in 1915 by the U.S. government to act as a conduit for private American philanthropy assisting Armenian and other refugees during World War I. A nice association copy of a book rarely found inscribed by the author. Very Good (contents clean & tight; minor browning endpapers); few tiny chips & short tears (little soil & bit of browning spine; small clear tape repair to interior) d/j.
