Moderate shelf/edge wear, tips through, 2/3 of spine free from front hinge (attached at rear), wear at head and heel, spot of pull on front paper pastedown, ex libris (book plate, security sticker and usual marks), else tight, bright and unmarred. Blue paper boards, paper pastedown, red ink lettering, black in lettering and decorative elements, brown endpages, tipped in plates, printed tissue guards. Oblong 4to. np. Illus. (b/w plates). Twelve lovely tipped-in plates with tissue guards (title, style, background, etc.). Binding in need of repair (or to be broken).

boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
tight : Used to mean that the binding of a book has not been overly loosened by frequent use.
heel : The lower most portion of the spine when the book is standing vertically.
plates : Full page illustrations or photographs. Plates are printed separately from the text of the book, and bound in at production. I.e., they are not sewn as parts of gatherings.
hinge : The portion of a book near the spine that is intended to flex to allow the book to open.
4to : Or quarto. A term used generally to describe the approximate size of a book, a book that is about 10" to 12" tall and roughly squarish in shape. The term is based on the size of paper traditionally used by book printers which has been folded and cut into 16 pages.

tipped in : used to describe something which has been glued into a book, for example a bookplate.
