Book Description
Amsterdam: Valk, c. 1703. Engraved with period outline colour. Browned at the edges, minor offset. Slight losses due to oxidation. 23 x 19 3/8 inches. 24 5/8 x 20 3/4 inches. Attractive Dutch map of Franche Comté Franche Comté or the Free County of Burgundy paid historically for its freedom in being frequently invaded by France, Burgundy, Germany and Switzerland before being permanently bound to France by Louis XIV. This example of the map appears to be a very early impression as the grid of scoring lines used as an aid to the engravers is still visible. These very fine lines wear off the plate after a few impressions are made. This is also indicated by the sharpness of the cartouche with its cherubs, grape vines and river god. This is a very attractive copy of the map. Koeman, Valk list #25
