Book Description

London: Messrs. William Tegg & Co., 1 August 1857. Tinted lithograph, coloured by hand, by Jane Hunt, printed by M. & N. Hanhart (expert repairs, one touching image area). 19 1/2 x 29 1/2 inches. 24 1/2 x 33 1/4 inches. A fine image after one of the greatest painters of sporting subjects of the Victorian era. Rolfe, perhaps the best known member of a family of sporting artists, exhibited widely in Britain during the middle of the 19th century. Specialising in 'still-life' scenes of animals and fish, he made a considerable name for himself with his highly accurate depictions: here the anatomy of each species is absolutely correct, something that the Victorian sportsman/art collector would have demanded. Jane Hunt is the lithographic artist who, in conjunction with Messrs. Hanhart, one of the two of three top firms of lithographic printers working in London at the time, has taken Rolfe's image and translated it with absolute fidelity: the day's 'bag' of a long ago Victorian sportsman here immortalised by the happy meeting of the arts of the painter and lithographer.
