Book Description
London: Published by T. Kinnersley, Feb. 20 1814. Engraving mounted on larger sheet of thick wove paper. Good condition apart from some overall light soiling, minor foxing, a few mild surface abrasions in the top margin. 9 x 5 1/2 inches. 10 5/8 x 7 5/8 inches. A charming print that most likely comes from a series depicting the various months of the year. William Marshall Craig was one of the most celebrated miniature-painters of his day. Through his considerable skill, he became drawing-master to Princess Charlotte of Wales, miniature-painter to the Duke and Duchess of York, and painter in watercolours to the queen. In addition to exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy, he became one of the principal engravers for a large Scripture Illustrated published in 1806. This charming print engraved by J. B. Neagle is a wonderful example of his considerable skill. The son of the prolific engraver James Neagle, John B. Neagle earned a reputation of his own as an artist of skill and beauty. He emigrated to America at a fairly young age, where he soon became one of the most famous portrait painters in Philadelphia. In addition to his numerous portraits, Neagle executed several book illustrations. Cf. Dictionary of National Biography; cf. Stauffer, American Engravers on Copper and Steel (1907), vol. 1, p, 188.
