Without text, 14 lithographs (1 folding), printed by Thayer & Co, after drawings by Van Lennep (4), Mrs. Hitchcock (4), Joseph Peckham (1) and others. An important selection of early lithographic views of Massachusetts. This charming series are all printed by the important early Boston lithographers B.W.Thayer & Co. and come from Edward Hitchcock's Final report on the geology of Massachusetts (Amherst & Northampton, 1841). The artists include Henry Van Lennep and Joseph Peckham, both of whom were alumni of Amherst College, Cambridge, Massachusetts. At the time of the publication of these images Edward Hitchcock (1793-1864) was the President of the college. Van Lennep subsequently served as a missionary in Asia Minor and went on to publish a number of books relating his experiences. The subjects of the present plates are as follows: 1.
