Book Description

London: published by F.J. Sargent, 6 August 1810. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by F.J. Sargent after J. Walmsley, backed onto early card mount. 19 1/4 x 25 3/4 inches. 28 3/4 x 22 1/2 inches. A highly atmospheric and almost lyrical view of `a place of retirement and peace' (Dorothy Wordsworth) Firmly in the 'picturesque' school of painters, Walmsley here shows an early summer morning on Loch Dochart, in Perthshire, Scotland: two travellers make an early start and the mist is still to be burnt off the waters by the newly risen sun, to the right the ruins of a church or Abbey are given a romantic air by the surrounding vegetation and the strongly-shadowed morning light. The Loch lies at the western end of Glen Lochart, a mile to the east of Crianlarich and in the shadow of Ben More.
