A few wrappers soiled or spotted (one notably so), one corner chipped, some scattered pencil marginalia, neat monogram stamp. An acceptable set, in scarce format. First edition, as issued, in eight parts, and quite scarce in this format. Newman's spirited rebuttal to Charles Kingsley's attack, and the account of his own rejection of Anglicanism and conversion to Catholicism, one of the prose classics of the Victorian age.
