Book Description
Berkhamsted, Herts, UK. Autumn 1965 through Spring 1972.. Whole numbers four through twenty-two (of twenty-two published). Nineteen numbers, in eighteen issues (one a double number). Quarto. Mimeographed text, stapled into pictorial wrappers. Frequent illustrations. Some light use to edges, a few staples slightly rusty, but a very nice set. Edited and published by John Cotton. The frequent illustrations and wrapper designs are often the work of Rigby Graham, including work in color, and original woodcuts and work in other media by others appear as well. An excellent and visually distinctive little magazine, highlighting contemporary poets, with emphasis on many of those associated with the Fantasy Press (issue 6 includes a checklist and appreciation of Mellor's imprint; Poet & Printer receives the same treatment in #14). Other contributors include Aldiss, Andrew Young, D.M. Thomas, Birney, Clark, Stallworthy, Logue, Redgrove, international poets in translation, et al. Issue 7 is devoted to Cotton's own poems, illustrated by Heinke Jenkins, limited to 250 copies, and bears Cotton's presentation inscription to poet/publisher James Laughlin. Issue 20 includes an extra-illustrated leaf inscribed by Cotton, with a reference to a review of JL's latest ND Anthology that appears therein; and issue 16 has an extra t.o.c. leaf laid in, also inscribed by Cotton. An extra copy of #13 (wrappers a bit sunned) is included. SULLIVAN (MODERN), pp.377-80.
