London J.M. Dent & Company 1898 Leather bound Later edition 638pp. Octavo [19.5 cm] 3/4 blue calf over blue marbled boards. Decorative gilt stamped panels between raised bands. Title gilt stamped back strip. Top edge gilt. Marbled endsheets and pastedowns. Very good. Light rubbing to extremities to boards. Mild bumping to corners. The spine is subtly faded. The edges of the endsheets are darkened. The title page and contents page have multiple dark foxing stains. An amusing collection of medieval based tales illustrated by Arthur Rackham. This being Rackham's first major illustrated work.

boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
rubbing : Abrasion or wear to the surface. Usually
used in reference to a book's boards or dust-jacket.
Marbled boards : A hardcover book with a decorative, multi-colored paper on the outside covering.
octavo : A book whose page size is approximately 12 inches by 9 inches. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been cut into eight pages.
top edge gilt : The top of the text block (the edges the pages that are visible when looking directly down at the top of a closed book) has been decorated with a gold-like finish.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
raised band(s) : On leather bound books, the ridges that protrude slightly from the spine.
bumping : Indicates that the affected part of the book has been impacted in such a way so as to cause a flattening, indention, or light bending.
gilt : The decorative application of gold or gold coloring to a portion of a book. The edges of the text block, or an inlay in the front cover of the boards, for example.
title page : A page where the title of the book, the author's name and publication information usually appear.
calf : Leather binding made from calfskin. Most common form of leather binding.
