Knopf 1965 Hardcover First edition SIGNED. 326pp. Octavo [21 cm] Bright yellow cloth covered boards with a silver and gilt stamped title on the spine, and the author's name stamped in silver on the front board. Very good. The spine ends and edges of the covers are gently bumped. There are numerous small brown stains on the spine. There is a small scuff mark on the bottom edge of the text block. The pages are mildly yellowed. The dust jacket is in very good condition, with darkening. The spine is a bit more heavily darkened. The edges are rubbed. There are several thin colored pencil marks on the front panel. Inscribed by John Updike on the front free endsheet.

boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
dust jacket : A protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book.
octavo : A book whose page size is approximately 12 inches by 9 inches. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been cut into eight pages.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
gilt : The decorative application of gold or gold coloring to a portion of a book. The edges of the text block, or an inlay in the front cover of the boards, for example.
bumped : Indicates that the affected part of the book has been impacted in such a way so as to cause a flattening, indention, or light bending.
inscribed : a short note written by the author or a previous owner in the beginning of a book, generally accompanied by a signature.
Cloth : Generally refers to a hardcover with cloth covering the outside of the book covers.
