New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1937 Hardcover First edition 299pp. Octavo [21.5 cm] Tan cloth covered boards with green ink stamped titles and designs on the spine and front cover. Very good with a very good dust jacket. The spine ends are very gently bumped. There is a very small light scuff mark on the bottom edge of the text block. A previous owner's name, along with an address on the front free endsheet. The edges of the endsheets have multiple small darkened stains. Bookplate on the front pastedown. The pages are slightly yellowed. Rubbing, chipping and minor edge tears to the dust jacket. Dust jacket spine has small losses to the ends. Rear panel is slightly yellowed. Not price clipped.

boards : Common term for the covers of a hardbound book.
rubbing : Abrasion or wear to the surface. Usually
used in reference to a book's boards or dust-jacket.
dust jacket : A protective and often decorative wrapper, usually made of paper which wraps around the binding of a book.
octavo : A book whose page size is approximately 12 inches by 9 inches. The size is based on a sheet of paper 25 inches by 38 inches, the size of paper traditionally used by book printers, which has been cut into eight pages.
spine : The outer portion of a book which covers the actual binding. The spine usually faces outward when a book is placed on a shelf. Also known as the back.
price clipped : The portion of the dust jacket flap where the publisher prints the suggested price has been cut away. Usually this is a clean 1-2" diagonal cut made with scissors.
chipping : A defect in which small pieces missing from the edges.
bookplate : A device (often decorative) affixed to the book, usually on the endpapers, which designates ownership (or former ownership).
bumped : Indicates that the affected part of the book has been impacted in such a way so as to cause a flattening, indention, or light bending.
pastedown : The paper glued to the inside cover of a hard cover book.
Cloth : Generally refers to a hardcover with cloth covering the outside of the book covers.
