A classic of the prison movie genre, the film starred Chester Morris, Wallace Beery, and Robert Montgomery. It was directed by Geortge W. Hill. Beery, as murderous Butch, is unforgettable; his scene in which he refuses to eat the commissary slop remains a classic. Frances Marion won an Oscar for Best Writing, Achievement for this film and the film also took the Oscar for Best Sound, Recording.
