(1844-1935). Greely, an explorer, fought in the Civil War. In the 1880s, he explored the Arctic for the government, and lost nineteen of his twenty-five men. New York. A "Broadway Bank" check signed by "A Oakey Hall" as New York City mayor. The check paid the "Bank of America... Fourteen thousand Dollars for redemption of N.Y. County Bonds for the repayment of Taxes due Nov 1st 1871... ". Much of the Tweed Ring defrauding came through bogus accounts and checks, and this may very well be one of them, considering the amount of the check and the "repayment of Taxes". An archive of about thirty items of Ethical Culture material, and most of the letters are to the American painter Douglas Volk, or the documents mention him. The highlight is a typed letter signed “Felix Adler”, dated August 18, 1902 from Beedes, Essex County, New York. A famous New York madam, Adler's "official greeters" served many of the city's high society, as well as gangsters. A Russian immigrant, she was arrested 13 times and never had a conviction until the 1930s; she did a 30-day stint in jail in 1935. New York. A two sided document, dated 1796 to 1803, showing interest due to a New York man. The writer notes on August 4th 1796 that he paid "Judge Smith for the Black the interest for 7 years" a total of three pounds. The document mentions a "George Clinton"; George Clinton served as New York Governor and Vice President. The document has some light aging, but is in fine condition overall.... more information
