Questioning officials concerning the storage of tobacco belonging to the Government of Austria in two autograph letters, signed 13 and 24 August, 1863, the first to Major E. Griswold, as Provost Marshall, the second to General John H. Winder, as "Commandant Department of Henrico." Accompanied by an official copy of a letter from Confederate Secretary of State Judah P. Benjamin to the Austrian consul at Richmond, 31 May 1862, concerning the tobacco. 4to. 3-pages, approximately 225 words. The first two letters addressed on the verso of a blank integral leaf, the third docketed on verso. Folded for mailing, the first two sealed, with seal breaks (no loss); lower portion of blank integral leaf torn away on the first letters, otherwise a very good lot
The consul was concerned that the Confederate authorities know that the tobacco was being moved around a bit, from warehouses on the Tye River to Richmond, for example, so that the Austrian claim on the tobacco would remain secure. The 1862 letter from Benjamin agreed that the consulate could store the tobacco at the Tye River warehouses. Such diplomatic correspondence between the Confederate and a foreign government is quite scarce in trade. ... more information
