The ultimate Hemingway-Bullfighting archive from the end of Hemingway's life. A lucky chestnut which Hemingway carried for 11 years, and returned to his editor and best friend, A. E. Hotchner, one month before his suicide.The other three items are closely tied to Hemingway's last great work, "Dangerous Summer": a magnificent 3-piece matador outfit used by the great matador Ordonez, worn as a lark in the ring by Hotchner, then purchased by Hemingway to present to Hotchner; the muletta sword used at the same time, and sterling silver trophy which Hemingway bestowed upon his friend, the novice. The group comes with impeccable provenance
The lucky chestnut was given to Hemingway by Hotchner, as is told in "Papa Hemingway" on pages 61 and 62. Hotchner also relates in this book how Hemingway returned it to him: "'...Here, I want you to have this'. He had the horse chestnut from Paris in his hand...". Hotchner never saw Hemingway alive again. This relic is especially poignant and personal. It may indeed be lucky - perhaps if Hemingway had kept it, he would not have committed suicide.
