John Ozell's extensive revision of the translation by Urquhart and Motteux of Rabelais's great works of fiction first appeared in 1737. In his preface here Ozell claimed to have corrected very many errors in the 1737 text. This edition also contains for the first time in English translations of the explanatory notes in the 1711 edition produced by Jacques Le Duchat, the best to date in French (see Brunet).
