Two volumes. This edition of Voltaire's once popular epic poem on Joan of Arc was the first to contain the 21 fine text engravings by Duplessis-Bertaux. It also contains notes and "plusieurs pieces qui y ont rapport." Also present are a preface by "Dom Apuleius Risorius, Benedictin," a letter by Voltaire on the poem's early editions, and two short works in verse about the poem. Bengesco 506. Mid-19th-century half dark green morocco and marbled paper–covered sides, leather edges with gilt fillet, spine with gilt-stamped title; spine faintly sunned, minor wear to corners and spine extremities. Top edge gilt. Front pastedown with unidentified dolphin and anchor bookplate. Tissue guard present following frontispiece but not elsewhere. Original ribbon bookmarker present and intact. Londres: aux depens de la compagnie. 1764. 8vo, pp. xvi, 384; engraved frontispiece and 20 engraved plates; 20th century full crimson straight-grain morocco by Zaehnsdorf, decorative gilt border on covers, gilt-paneled spine, and preserving the original blue printed wrappers which are bound in. First published without plates at Louvain in 1755. This is likely a 'variorum' edition, probably Dutch, based on the first authorized edition of 1762 (Geneva), with variant readings from earlier piracies. Ben... more information
