In an effort to assist in the recovery of materials missing as a result of the Carnegie Library theft, the ABAA would like to bring to the public’s attention the list of items believed stolen. Click this link to view the list. Update 8/20/18: The following list includes more details.

Should any member of the public identify having purchased or otherwise having knowledge of the disposition or current location of any items from the Carnegie Library—whether on this list or not—please contact one of the following detectives from Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office:

· Det. Fran Laquatra
  (412) 388-5305

· Det. Perann Tansmore

Edward S. Curtis (American, 1868-1952) "The North American Indian..." New York, 1907 qr970.1 C93   Unnumbered; one of 272 sets   40 vols, 4to and large folio, library buckram. 20 text vols and 20 portfolios of plates, loose as issued. Plate vols with 720 (of 723) large folio photogravure plates, numbered 1 - 722 (includes two plates both numbered 400); lacking plates 1, 3 and 16 that were present in the 1991 appraisal. The text volumes are lacking nearly all, except a few scattered throughout of unremarkable subjects, of 1,505 photogravure plates that were present in the 1991 appraisal. "The North American Indian: Being a Series of Volumes Picturing and Describing the Indians of the United States and Alaska" 1991 fair market appraisal value: $85,000 From 1991 appraisal: "40 Volumes (20 quarto text volumes and 20 portfolios of plates). Text volumes bound in sturdy brown library buckram, with gilt-stamped spine lettering and numbering. The portfolios are bound in identical cloth, with cloth ties. All text volumes have perforated CLP stamp on title-page, as well as other ink stamps; there are no markings on any of the photos in the text volumes. Each portfolio volume includes a one-page printed list of the enclosed photos; the list in each volume has the CLP perforated stamp. A small "Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh'', blue ink stamp is on the rear of each folio print (no markings on front). The text volumes include over 1500 photos. The portfolios include a total of 723 mounted prints, numbered Plate 1 through 722 (includes two plates both numbered 400). Plates 111-118 and plate 119 are out of sequence with portfolios 3 and 4, respectively (as issued). Plate 150 is correctly numbered. The plates in folios 5-13, 15-16, and 18 are loosely placed within individual mats (apparently as issued), and each is protected by a plain wrapper. Although 500 sets of this work were projected, the actual number of sets that were printed and sold is now assumed to have been 272 sets. Apparently each set was numbered. The Carnegie copy, however, set is signed and dated by Curtis (at the end of his General Introduction in Text Volume I), the CLP set is unsigned. The set was originally published at $3850. The text and portfolio volumes were originally issued in gilt-decorated half leather bindings; the CLP set was either rebound before or after the Library's purchase. The Library purchased this set in 1947-- apparently for $525-- with funds from the Annie M. Mellor Fund. This acquisition represents one of the few times that the Library deliberately purchased a rare book. A monumental work, Curtis's North American Indian Portfolio is considered the finest and most valuable ever done on the American and Alaskan Indian and Eskimo. As one bookseller stated, "It is, without question, the most comprehensive work on the American Indian and a landmark in the history of photography." Purchased by the library in 1947 for $525 Howes C-965; Truthful Lens, 40; Roosens & Salu 2702 Text volumes: perforated library stamps to title pages as well as other ink stamps throughout. Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied, Prince; Karl Bodmer "Reise in das Innere Nord-America...." Paris, 1840-1843 Worthington qr917.3 M521       Folio, contemp 3/4 leather & cloth; rubbed, rear hinge split. Lacking 81 hand-colored aquatint plates present in the 1991 appraisal. 1991 fair market appraisal value - estimated $175,000 - $250,000 From the 1991 appraisal: "The plates are bound together in a contemporary 3/4 leather and cloth boards binding; the rear hinge is completely split. While the quality of the plates themselves is excellent and the paper exhibits no foxing whatsoever, the stock is somewhat brittle and some pages have been damaged and have become detached. Principally, vignette plates Nos. 1-4 and no. 7 are presently detached; the edges of vignette plate no. 1 are chipped, and vignette plate no. 7 has some tears into the image. Of 48 large plates, plates numbers 46-8 are presently detached. They have split along the outer edge of the plate impression, with some loss of the blank impression portion of the sheet, but with no loss of image. Carnegie card file notes this volume to be the 'Atlas of the French Translation”. The complete work was first published in Coblenz (1839-41, two volumes quarto text with 31 plates plus atlas folio of 48 plates). The first English translation appeared in 1839 as 'Travels in the Interior of North America' (London). Contains 81 hand-colored aquatint plates after Karl Bodmer, many heightened with gum arabic and all plates with the blindstamp 'C Bodmer / Direct'. With 33 vignette illustrations (numbered 1-33) and 48 larger illustrations (numbered 1-48), all printed on the same size sheets, vignette plates bound in sequence before the large plates. Tissue guards are present with all plates. This volume lacks a separate title-page as well as the folding map which was later added to some copies. All of the original Atlas volumes to Maximilian's Travels were, as Howes notes, 'issued in Paris... It came with all plates uncolored, with some uncolored and with all colored.' As noted, all plates in the Worthington copy are colored. The 33 vignette illustrations were designed to accompany the 33 text chapters of the Coblenz edition and were first printed on small sheets and the 48 larger plates were issued in a separate atlas. Howes notes, that atlas volume of the French edition and the English 1843 edition both contained all 81 total plates 'on folio sheets and with titles in German, French, and English', as found in the Worthington copy. Although the Worthington copy is probably not from the first issue of the atlas, it is undoubtedly an early issue. The coloring of each plate remains brilliant, and the images are all crisp. It may be argued that this folio issue of all the plates is more desirable, and has a higher market value, than an issue with the vignette illustrations printed on smaller sheets. The plates are based upon the original art of the Swiss artist Karl Bodmer. Bodmer was engaged by Prince Maximilian to record his travels among the Plains Indians from1832 to 1834. When Maximilian and Bodmer returned to Europe in 1834, they spent the next few years preparing for publication the text and plates of this work. The plates made from Bodmer’s sketches were the first truly accurate depictions of the Plains Indians to reach the public. Howes described Bodmer’s work as 'the most beautiful, faithful and vivid ever produced depicting western plains and Indians.'"   Abbey 615; Howes M443a.
